The Huron-Clinton Metroparks system is a regional network of parks offering diverse outdoor recreation, natural habitats, and scenic landscapes close to metropolitan Detroit and surrounding communities.
Spanning across five counties in southeast Michigan, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks system encompasses 13 individual parks ranging from lakeside retreats and forested woodlands to prairie preserves and riverfront areas. Established in 1940, the Metroparks were created to provide accessible, family-friendly outdoor spaces near urban centers, promoting conservation and outdoor recreation. The parks together cover over 25,000 acres of protected natural spaces featuring diverse ecosystems including hardwood forests, wetlands, river corridors, and open fields. Popular activities within these parks include hiking, biking, fishing, boating, golfing, and birdwatching. Several parks feature large inland lakes and river frontage along the Huron and Clinton Rivers, supporting paddle sports and fishing opportunities. The Metropark system also boasts golf courses, nature centers, picnic areas, splash pads, and winter sports facilities like sledding hills and cross-country ski trails. Key landmarks include the scenic Alligator Bayou boardwalk at Lake Erie Metropark, the historic Wolcott Mill Farm & Brewery in Wolcott Mill Metropark, and the large Stony Creek Lake with its beach and marina. With well-maintained trails and family-oriented amenities, the parks provide accessible outdoor experiences year-round. The system serves both locals and visitors seeking natural beauty, active recreation, and educational programming within an easy drive from Detroit and adjacent communities.
